Modern Block Paved Driveway in Middleton, Manchester
This project was a complete overhaul of a tired and narrow driveway in Middleton. The original space consisted of a simple tarmac lane and an adjacent patch of messy gravel, which was impractical and dated. The goal was to create a wider, more functional, and visually striking driveway with a clean, contemporary design and custom details.
Before & After
Before: The property had a narrow tarmac driveway flanked by an area of weeds and loose gravel. The entrance felt cramped, and the overall look was untidy and did not complement the modern home.
After: The entire frontage has been transformed into a wide, sophisticated driveway. The bold charcoal block paving creates a sharp, modern look, while the unique two-tone border adds a bespoke design feature. The new driveway is now a practical, multi-car space that massively enhances the property’s kerb appeal.
Work Undertaken
- Excavation and Preparation: The project began with the complete removal of the old tarmac driveway and the excavation of the adjacent gravel and soil area. The entire space was dug out to the required depth to create a solid foundation for a much wider surface.
- Sub-Base Installation: A heavy-duty geotextile membrane was laid across the cleared area to prevent future weed growth. This was followed by the installation of a deep MOT Type 1 hardcore sub-base, which was thoroughly compacted to ensure a stable and long-lasting foundation.
- Bespoke Edging and Step Construction: We created a distinctive double border using a combination of light grey and charcoal block pavers. This included a unique “key” shaped design feature at the entrance to give the driveway a custom look. A new, matching step was also constructed at the front door for safe and stylish access.
- Paving and Finishing: The main body of the driveway was laid with charcoal block pavers in a classic 45-degree herringbone pattern. A recessed manhole cover was integrated seamlessly into the design. To complete the project, kiln-dried sand was brushed into all the joints, and the entire surface was compacted to lock the pavers firmly in place.
The Result
The finished project is a stunning, modern driveway that is both highly practical and rich in design detail. The contrast between the charcoal pavers and the light grey edging creates a sharp, contemporary aesthetic. The custom “key” feature, the new step, and the flush-fitting drain cover all demonstrate a high level of craftsmanship and attention to detail, resulting in a flawless, high-end finish.
